From Passion To Purpose

You know when a topic comes up in conversation that makes you sit a little straighter and talk a little faster? That is what the topic of health and nutrition has become for us! But, this has not always been the case. Our interest in health and nutrition (and the plant-based whole foods lifestyle specifically) is part of an on-going process of learning, personal growth, and self-discovery that in many ways started with a change in the food we eat, but extends far beyond what’s on our plates. Hopefully our personal story will be an encouragement to you.

We took our first steps in our plant-based journey when Megan decided to do a 21-day detox in January 2015 to address her high cholesterol and long-term sugar addiction. Her detox included avoiding all meat, dairy, eggs, sugar and processed foods. Scott decided to do the detox as well with the goal of losing weight that he had regained over the previous year; however, he continued to consume eggs and chicken.

S&M-story-pic1-webAfter the initial 21 days, Megan’s cholesterol dropped 50 points and she noticed significant improvements in her energy level, digestion, and mood. These positive changes motivated her to continue the lifestyle beyond the 21 days and also begin a deeper exploration of the scientific evidence supporting the plant-based whole foods lifestyle. The more she learned, the more convinced she became about continuing to live this way and the more passionate she became about sharing the lifestyle with others.

During Scott’s detox, he also noticed an increase in energy and he had lost some weight as well. He continued to minimize sugar and processed foods after the initial detox, but went back to eating meat and dairy on a regular basis. After this change, he noticed his energy levels started to go back down while his weight started to go back up.

Over the next few months as Megan was learning more about the benefits of plant-based whole foods, Scott was being exposed second-hand. He would sometimes listen during a podcast or heS&M-story-pic3-web would watch a documentary with her. As he was exposed to more information and saw Megan’s growing passion for the lifestyle, he eventually decided to move to entirely plant-based eating for one week to “test it out”. His main concern was removing chicken, eggs, and cheese from his diet as he could never have imagined going without those foods for very long. That first week turned out to be “not as bad” as he expected and he started to feel significantly better, so he increased it to two weeks, then a month, and then for the foreseeable future!

Scott continues to feel better (and is leaner) than even in his younger years. He always says that this was a completely unexpected change in his life as he was someone who always thought there was “no way” he could be plant-based. His example goes to show that when compelling information meets positive results (combined with a supportive environment), any person can make a change for the better in their life!

This is a journey, not a destination

We understand that nutrition and health are complex issues, which is why we have continued to research these topics in depth since these early months in our plant-based journey. We have tapped into the knowledge of leading experts in this field through books, podcasts, online articles, published nutrition studies and attending conferences. Megan also received her Certification in Plant-Based Nutrition from eCornell University in February 2016. The more we have both learned about and experienced the benefits of plant-based whole foods, the more passionate we have become about sharing the lifestyle with others. Our passion has only increased as we have witnessed friends and family make similar changes and experience positive results. It has grown into a life purpose to educate others about the benefits of a plant-based whole foods lifestyle and equip them to take the first steps to realize these benefits in their own lives!
